 Our Story

Our story began with a desire to create beautiful, timeless, one-of-a-kind products at a fair price from reclaimed wood.

Lance Satterfield began his career in the demolition and salvage business in Dallas 30 years ago. He immediately recognized the quality and beauty of antique, old growth dimensional Pine lumber. After a little digging, he learned that this wood was harvested from virgin forests inhabited with 100-400 years old trees that are no longer in existence, and from species that aren't farmed today. From this discovery his idea to salvage reclaimed products was born.

In 2002, Lance started Old Texas Wood and began demolishing homes and buildings and milling reclaimed wood into tongue and groove flooring, shiplap and wood ready to be used for accent walls and in DIY Projects. As he serviced more and more home owners, restaurant owners, retailers, builders, and architects his capacity needs grew and he set up shop in the original Trinity Valley Building Center located on seven acres in South Dallas. TVBC was born in the 40s as WW2 ended and baby boomers were born and their parents needed homes. For 55 years, TVBC sold lumber to builders, but also built and financed homes and subdivisions all over Dallas. Lance often laughs and says he's milling and storing the exact same lumber that passed through this barn 50 - 70 years ago.

OUR PROCESS

SALVAGE

Before our buildings and homes are demolished, a quick assessment is done to determine what type of salvage materials are available.

Lance and the crew can tell exactly what is under the exterior just by knowing the build date and having a quick glance. For example, a home built before 1950 will have Long Leaf Pine lumber for dimensional framing and joists, Pine shiplap walls, and 3-1/4" Pine tongue and groove floors. A home built in 1955 will have Douglas Fir dimensional lumber for framing, and no shiplap walls. By 1955, Texans had depleted the virgin Long Leaf Pine forests and were buying Douglas Fir dimensional lumber from the West coast. Right before the demo is scheduled, our salvage team quickly comes in and removes what can be saved.

DE-NAIL & INSPECTION

Every piece of lumber that arrives to our facility is rigorously inspected for usability.

Pieces with mold, rot and signs of instabilty are discareded, while the usable pieces are denailed. One by one, and by hand, all nails and metal debris are removed. Once Lumber has been denailed, each piece is metal detected. Any debris left would damage our millworks equipment. At this point, the wood's humidity level is also gauged... 99% of the wood we receive is dry and cured, and ready for processing. If it's not ready we leave it to cure.

STORAGE

All inspected wood is stacked and stored by species and by size.

Seemingly trivial, but this important step keeps life moving along in this already mature lumber... It's kept off of the ground, and dependiing on its next purpose, we keep each piece separated from one another, or we stack them tightly. From here, it's waiting to be milled into tongue and groove flooring, shiplap or planed and straight edged.

MILL

Prepped and ready lumber is ready to be run through our moulder and chopped in our whirlwind upsaw, morphing into its next glory - tongue and groove flooring, shiplap, or wall cladding.

STACK

As wood comes off of the millworks equipment, it is inspected, counted, stacked and bundled... ready for its new forever home!
